Composting

Our Mission

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from organic matter in landfills targeting residents, businesses, institutions, and municipal governments — through educating, promoting, advocating, and supporting backyard composting and municipal programs.

To educate the general public on the inefficacy of the current blue box recycling programs and the true cost/benefit analysis of recycling.

To explore and develop locally-appropriate strategies for radically reducing waste from all sources. To promote refuse, repurpose, repair, reduce, reuse as paths toward zero-waste.

  • CNL is hosting & attending events and presentations that educate our community on the benefits of composting. We are developing & creating educational resources to help inform our community and local politicians about the benefits of composting

We are organizing volunteers to support waste reduction and divert food waste at local events.

We are currently assessing opportunities for municipal composting, including fungal-dominant compost and neighbourhood digesters.

  • If you would like to volunteer with the Composting and Waste Reduction Working Group please contact us or fill out the volunteer form.

Just Good Compost

A new pilot project in Almonte that converts our everyday food scraps into valuable, usable soil for local farmers. The process is simple. They give you a small, refurbished bucket for your kitchen scraps. Each week we pick up this bucket and replace it with a clean one. Your scraps are then taken to local farmers for compost. Simple, effective. No pests, no mess, Their motto is “If you would eat it, we will take it”.

How Are Just Good Compost and Climate Network Lanark Related?

The majority of the JGC team is also involved with various Climate Network Lanark activities.

As individuals who share the same commitment to diverting waste, building healthy soil, and sustainable communities, we continue to promote projects and activities that help educate and increase participation in composting.

How Did Just Good Compost Start?

Founder, Will Affleck, a scientist, researcher, and professor of psychiatry at the University of Ottawa was inspired to create JGC years ago when studying in Montreal.  He witnessed the beginning of Compost Montreal, initially one individual who collected compost buckets on the back of his bicycle who now is diverting hundreds of tons of waste every year from the Montreal garbage system.  Affleck was inspired to make the same impact in Almonte and surrounding communities.
