Outdoor Equipment
Our recent workshop on electric outdoor equipment highlighted the numerous advantages of switching from traditional gas-powered appliances to electric alternatives.
Electric outdoor equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers, offers significant benefits over their gas counterparts. These electric tools are generally lighter to carry, making yard work easier and more manageable. They often come with interchangeable batteries, providing convenience and reducing the need for multiple power sources.
One of the key advantages of electric outdoor equipment is the reduction in carbon emissions. Unlike gas-powered tools, which produce harmful emissions contributing to air pollution and climate change, electric equipment runs on clean energy, resulting in lower environmental impact. Additionally, electric tools tend to be quieter, providing a more peaceful experience for users and their neighbors.
By transitioning to electric outdoor equipment, individuals can contribute to a greener, more sustainable future while enjoying the practical benefits of these advanced tools. Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by electricity stored in batteries rather than traditional fossil fuels. These batteries, typically lithium-ion, store and supply energy to electric motors, which drive the vehicle. When the battery is depleted, it can be recharged by plugging the vehicle into an electrical outlet or a dedicated charging station. EVs offer a cleaner alternative to conventional vehicles by producing zero tailpipe emissions, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. With advancements in battery technology and an expanding charging infrastructure, EVs are becoming increasingly popular as a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation.

A hot water heating system is a method of heating a building or providing hot water for domestic use. The common types on the market include:
Conventional Electric Water Heaters: Use electric resistance coils to heat water stored in a tank.
Pros: Lower upfront cost, easy to install and maintain, reliable.
Cons: Higher energy bills, standby heat loss, shorter lifespan.
Oil-Fired Water Heaters: Use oil to heat water stored in a tank.
Pros: Heats water quickly, can integrate with existing oil heating systems, suitable for areas without natural gas.
Cons: High operating costs, regular maintenance required, higher carbon emissions, bulky.
Natural Gas or Propane Water Heaters: Use natural gas or propane to heat water stored in a tank.
Pros: Quick recovery times, energy-efficient, lower carbon emissions.
Cons: Requires propane storage tank and deliveries, higher costs, potential safety concerns, professional installation needed.
Instantaneous (Tankless) Water Heaters: Heat water on demand without a storage tank.
Pros: No standby heat loss, compact, endless hot water, longer lifespan.
Cons: Higher initial cost, limited flow rate, requires professional installation, might need system upgrades.
Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heaters: Extract heat from the air and transfer it to the water.
Pros: Highly efficient, lower operating costs, lower carbon emissions, consistent hot water, long lifespan.
Cons: May require room temperature control, higher initial cost.
Each type has its own advantages and is suited to different needs and circumstances, providing various options for efficient and sustainable water heating.

Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are an energy-efficient solution for heating and cooling, transferring heat between the inside and outside air instead of generating it, making them a popular choice for cost savings and environmental benefits.
On September 19th, Tom Duglosz, owner of Core Cann, led an informative workshop at the new net-zero Beckwith Municipal Office, which features heat pumps tied to a vertical geothermal exchange loop. Attendees learned how heat pumps operate, why they are more efficient and cost-effective than traditional systems, and how they help reduce carbon footprints. The workshop presented the opportunity to participants to see a variety of heat pumps up close.
Home Resiliency
The Home Resiliency Workshop was designed to empower homeowners with the knowledge and tools to protect their homes and families from the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Participants learned to assess risks associated with extreme weather events, such as floods, fires, and heatwaves, and discovered practical strategies to enhance their home’s resilience.
