September 2023

Dear Friend,

Fall is around the corner and we at CNL are looking forward to changing leaves, cooling temperatures, and pumpkins.

Below, you'll find important September dates and events, as well as a chance to help CNL continue our important work.

Thank you for your continued support,

The CNL Team

🗓️Save the Date(s)🗓️

September 6th

  • Rural Transportation Network meeting for County Council
  • CNL is a signatory on this issue, with 29 others, and we encourage the public to show up to the meeting for support! See more below.

September 15th

  • CNL organizes Global Day of Action on Climate in Lanark Village
  • Climate activists will invite Lanark Village residents to make the village a beacon of climate leadership by adopting money and climate savings actions.
  • Lanark Village and Balderson are communities that are technically scheduled for expansion of the natural gas system, running up Hwy 511 from Perth. However, natural gas, which is methane, is now considered to be worse than carbon dioxide at heating the planet over the short term.
  • CNL is inviting our supporters to come out and help promote the message that Fossil Fuels Must Go, at the information picket in Lanark Village. This is CNL’s contribution to the Global Day of Action to End Fossil Fuels.
  • We will provide literature that explains the costs and savings that most residents may not be aware of and that means that an electric heat pump comes in at about $11,500 less than a natural gas furnace over the lifetime of the equipment.
  • The action will start at the Lanark Village Farmers’ Market (83 George St.) at 11:45am and finish at 1pm. Information on cost-effective, climate-friendly heat pumps and on Climate Network Lanark’s Lanark Village Climate Concierge project will be handed out during and after the rally.
  • If you’re coming from across Lanark County, please consider car pooling. Please use CNL’s FB page to help coordinate travel.
  • Friday's For Future

CNL's Response to Lanark County's

Climate Action Plan

CNL submitted our response to Lanark County’s Draft Climate Action Plan. It was a very gratifying huge group effort with many great people from CNL’s superb network contributing. To see our comprehensive response click here!

The Hub's AGM

The Hub, which is the grandmother of reuse stores in Lanark County, has invited Sue Brandum to speak at its Annual General Meeting on September 25th. The Hub generously gave CNL $5,000 last year, as part of its donations of $109,000 back to the community.

CNL invited to address the Perth Climate Change Action Panel

Sue Brandum will present to the Perth Climate Change Action Panel on September 21st on some options available to Perth to encourage new house net zero builds and retrofits as a means of cutting Perth’s contribution to the climate crisis. You can attend the meeting in person, or join the meeting live via Facebook at 1 p.m. The link will be available on the Town of Perth’s Meeting Portal which can be found here.

30-Member Association Asks Lanark County Council for Action on Public Transit

CNL has joined with 29 other organizations to encourage Lanark County Council to conduct a feasibility study on a public transit system for the County. The group, under the name of the Lanark Rural Transportation Working Group, is presenting to County Council on Wednesday, September 6th.

We are asking people to turn out to let Councillors know how critical this issue is. Please arrive at the Council Chambers, at 99 Sunset Blvd., (Christie Lake Road) Perth, for 5 pm. The full Council meeting will proceed, followed by the Community Services committee which will hear the presentation. Transportation is the single largest congtributor of Greenhouse Gas emissions in Lanark County, at 64% of total emissions. Having a good public transportation system could go a long way to reducing our emissions.
